aus dem entlegenen süden des österreichischen burgenlandes bläst der sturmwind „oxymoron“ heran, das neue album von markus zeiner a.k.a. kelvin raah.
in den über drei jahrzehnten seines musikalischen schaffens stellt „oxyomoron“ den bisherigen höhepunkt seiner musikerkarriere dar. nach einer klassischen ausbildung beschäftigte er sich vor allem mit ernster zeitgenössischer musik und war als gitarrist und bassist in mehreren (art-)rock, jazz und experimentalgruppierungen tätig, bis er sich anfang der achtziger elektronischer musik, softwareprogrammierung und sounddesign zuwandte. in den neunzigern bestimmten computer-live-performances und sein mitwirken bei den „vögeln europas“ seinen weg.
2000 startete er mit seinem solo-projekt „kelvin raah“, mit dem er neben einigen online-releases und live-auftritten mit ausgeklügelter multi-media performance vor allem an seinem album arbeitete.
„oxyomoron“ präsentiert 11 tracks, die ihre zahlreichen und unterschiedlichen einflüsse nicht verbergen können – aber auch nicht wollen. über ein grundgerüst aus jazz-strukturen und experimentellen hip hop beats entfalten sich gewaltige soundscapes mit einflüssen aus world-music, versteckt findet man aber auch ironische zitate.
versucht man „oxymoron“ in der jüngeren musikgeschichte zu positionieren, so findet man ähnliche zugänge noch am ehesten beim englischen label „ninja tune“ und seinen proponenten wie „amon tobin“ oder „herbaliser“. auf jene bezogen sich zwar schon vor jahren heutzutage sehr erfolgreiche österreichische acts, diese haben ihr glück aber offenbar am anderen ende des musikalischen spektrums gefunden.

11. haleine markus zeiner’s, alias kelvin raah’s, new album “oxymoron” is turning up like a whirlwind from the remote south of the austrian province called burgenland.
the album can be regarded as the present highlight of raah’s long lasting music career; a career that is already in its third decade. after having enjoyed a classic education, he mostly dealed with contemporary music. in addition, he was a guitar and bass player in various (art-)rock, jazz and experimental formations until he started to concentrate on electronic music, software programming and sound design at the beginning of the 80s.
in the 90s computer-live performances and his involvement in the group “vögel europas” (birds of europe) further determined his career. in 2000 he finally started his solo-project, named “kelvin raah”. the project itself has not only lead to some onlinereleases but his sophisticated multi-media live performances have also provided him with new ideas for his latest album.
the album “oxymoron” presents 11 tracks whose numerable and diverse influences cannot be concealed – a rather positive aspect in the eyes of the producer. the sound of the album is based on jazz-structures and experimental hip-hop beats. however, a strong influence of world-music, which is represented by magnificent soundscapes, cannot be denied either.
furthermore, there are quite a few ironical quotations to be found between the lines. if one tries to position “oxymoron” among the latest history of music, one would probably only come across similar approaches in the sphere of influence of the english label “ninja tune” and its proponents “amon tobin” and “herbaliser”. some years ago, their music style and new ideas certainly contributed to some promising austrian productions. however, most of these producers are rather successful today but unfortunately, they are to be located at the other end of the music spectrum. tmp-006cd | album
